We recommend natural insulation materials β sheep's wool, wood fibre or hemp β for listed Cambridge properties as they're breathable, reversible and sympathetic to traditional construction methods.
The most common loft insulation material is mineral wool (glass fibre or rock wool rolls) β cheap, effective, widely available and easy to install. For Cambridge homes, 270mm depth is the target. Mineral wool works well in most situations but has limitations: it loses effectiveness when wet, it's uncomfortable to handle, and it shouldn't be compressed (which reduces its thermal performance). For over-rafter insulation during a re-roof, rigid PIR (polyisocyanurate) boards like Kingspan or Celotex are the standard choice β they give the highest thermal performance per millimetre of thickness, meaning you can achieve excellent insulation without significantly raising the roof height. For eco-conscious homeowners, sheep's wool and wood fibre insulation offer natural alternatives with good thermal performance and excellent moisture management β particularly suitable for period properties where breathability matters.
