Choosing between EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass for your Cambridge flat roof? Both are excellent modern systems, but they suit different situations. Here's an honest comparison.
For Cambridge flat roofs, EPDM rubber suits garages and areas with deck movement, while GRP fibreglass suits extensions and walkable surfaces. EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane laid in a single sheet over your roof deck. It's adhered with contact adhesive or mechanically fixed. The single-sheet installation means fewer joints and potential leak points. EPDM remains flexible from -40Β°C to +120Β°C β making it ideal for Cambridge's climate where summer heat and winter frost create significant temperature swings.
EPDM is the lighter of the two systems, making it suitable for garage roofs where the deck structure may not support the weight of GRP. It resists UV degradation well and typically lasts 25β30 years with minimal maintenance.

GRP (glass reinforced polyester) is a rigid system built up in layers β a resin basecoat, chopped strand mat embedded in resin, and a UV-resistant topcoat. The result is a seamless, hard-wearing surface that can be walked on without damage. GRP is the stronger of the two systems and better suited to flat roofs that need to be accessed regularly β for example, above a single-storey extension where you need to reach upper windows for cleaning.
GRP is heavier than EPDM and requires a rigid, stable deck β typically 18mm WBP plywood. It cannot flex, so it's not suitable for roofs that experience significant movement.
For a typical Cambridge garage flat roof (approximately 15mΒ²), EPDM costs Β£800βΒ£1,800 installed. GRP costs Β£1,200βΒ£2,500 for the same area. The price difference is mainly in materials β EPDM membrane is cheaper than GRP resin and matting. Labour is roughly equivalent.
For larger extension roofs (25β40mΒ²), EPDM costs Β£2,000βΒ£4,000 and GRP costs Β£3,000βΒ£6,000. The gap widens on larger roofs because GRP requires more material per square metre.
For garage roofs across Arbury, King's Hedges and Cherry Hinton β where the deck is often older timber that may flex slightly β EPDM is usually the better choice. Its flexibility accommodates minor movement without cracking.
For extension roofs that may be walked on, and for balcony areas on newer properties in Trumpington Meadows and Clay Farm, GRP gives a harder-wearing surface that handles foot traffic.
For riverside properties in Chesterton and St Ives, EPDM resists the higher humidity better β moss slides off rubber more easily than it does off GRP's textured topcoat.
Both systems last 25β30 years. EPDM requires almost no maintenance β an annual check of the edges and any penetrations is sufficient. GRP benefits from an occasional re-coat of the topcoat (every 10β15 years) to maintain UV protection. Neither system should hold standing water β if water pools on your flat roof for more than 48 hours after rain, the drainage falls need correcting regardless of which system is fitted.
GRP fibreglass cannot be installed in rain or at temperatures below 5Β°C β the resin won't cure properly. This means GRP installations in Cambridge need careful scheduling, particularly in autumn and winter. A job that takes one day in June might need to be rescheduled two or three times in November. EPDM is more forgiving β it can be installed in light rain and at lower temperatures, making it the more reliable choice for Cambridge's unpredictable weather patterns.
Both systems require a completely dry deck surface at the point of installation. If we strip old felt and find the deck boards are damp, they need to dry out or be replaced before the new membrane goes on. In the damper areas of Cambridge β Chesterton, St Ives, Huntingdon β we budget extra time for deck preparation and sometimes recommend marine-grade plywood that handles moisture better than standard WBP boards.
Over a 25-year period, EPDM typically costs less in total β lower initial installation cost, almost zero maintenance and no topcoat renewal. GRP costs more upfront, needs a topcoat refresh around year 12β15, but gives a harder-wearing surface if the roof is regularly walked on. For a Cambridge garage roof that nobody walks on, EPDM is almost always the better investment. For an extension roof that doubles as a balcony, GRP justifies the premium.

Before committing to any flat roof installation, ask: what deck board will you use β plywood or OSB? What membrane thickness β 1.0mm or 1.2mm EPDM? How many layers of GRP laminate? What falls will you create for drainage? Will you inspect and replace damaged deck boards? What's the guarantee β workmanship and materials? A competent installer will answer these confidently. Evasive answers or vague specifications are warning signs.
