This is the single most important decision in chimney repointing. Victorian and Edwardian chimneys in Romsey Town, Petersfield, Chesterton and Newnham were built with lime mortar — a soft, breathable material that allows moisture to escape and flexes with thermal movement. Repointing these chimneys with hard cement mortar traps moisture inside the brickwork, causing the softer period bricks to crack and spall. Post-war chimneys on the estates — Arbury, King's Hedges, Coleridge — were built with cement mortar and can be repointed with the same. The harder modern bricks cope fine with cement.
We rake out the failed mortar to a depth of at least 15mm using hand tools — never angle grinders, which damage the brick arrises. The joints are cleaned and dampened. New mortar is pressed in firmly, filling the full depth of the joint. The finish profile is matched to the existing — flush, bucket handle or weatherstruck depending on what's original. On lime mortar work, joints are misted with water for several days to aid slow curing.

The most common mistake is using cement mortar on a Victorian chimney. Cement is rigid — it doesn't flex with thermal movement. As the chimney heats and cools through day-night and seasonal cycles, the rigid cement cracks away from the softer period bricks, often pulling brick faces off with it. This accelerates deterioration rather than preventing it. The second common mistake is pointing over existing failed mortar rather than raking it out to depth. Surface pointing looks neat but has no structural value — it peels off within a year because there's nothing behind it.
Using angle grinders to rake out old mortar is another frequent error. The spinning disc damages the edges (arrises) of the bricks, creating channels where water sits and frost damage begins. Professional repointing uses hand tools — plugging chisels and raking bars — that remove mortar without damaging the brickwork. It takes longer but preserves the bricks for another century.
You can assess your chimney's condition from ground level with binoculars. Look for: white salt deposits on the brickwork (efflorescence — indicates moisture penetration), visible gaps where mortar has fallen out, pieces of mortar in the gutter, bricks that look darker or damper than surrounding ones, and lead flashings that have lifted or pulled away from the brickwork. From inside, check for damp patches on the chimney breast — especially after rain. If you can push a key into the mortar joints from a ladder and it goes in easily, the mortar has failed and repointing is overdue.
Lime mortar cures slowly — it reaches initial set within 24–48 hours but continues hardening over several weeks. During this curing period, the joints need to stay damp — we mist lime-pointed chimneys with water daily for the first week in dry weather. Don't be alarmed if lime mortar looks lighter than the surrounding brickwork initially — it darkens as it cures and weathers, eventually matching the original colour within 6–12 months. Cement mortar cures faster but should still be protected from heavy rain for 24 hours after application. After curing, your repointed chimney should need no further attention for 20–30 years in typical Cambridge conditions — longer if the chimney is sheltered from prevailing weather.
